Pastor's Discretionary Fund

The Pastor's Discretionary Fund was established to assist the needy in our congregation and community.  It receives no regular funds from the church and is fully supported by your contributions.

In order to be good stewards, most distributions are limited to $25 - $50 and paid directly to the vendor for bills. Checks are rarely given directly to the beneficiaries.

Contributions left at the altar during communion benefit the Discretion Fund.

To make a contribution, please note “PDF” on your check or offering envelope.

ANH GIBBS: TRULY THE HANDS AND FEET OF JESUS

September 2009

Hello Families and Friends,

For a long time I've thought about doing a long-distance walk to benefit the breast cancer cause, and this is the year when I finally say "NO MORE EXCUSES!"  Breast cancer has become too widespread and I can no longer continue to sit back without taking action!  I hope you'll join and support me in the fight.

On the weekend of October 24 and 25, 2009, I'll walk as one with a community of thousands in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Charlotte North Carolina.  I chose to walk the 40 miles Avon Walk event because I'm so impressed that the Avon Foundation addresses the whole picture:  medical research into the possible causes, prevention, treatment, and cure of breast cancer; clinical care for breast cancer patients; support services for patients and their families; educational seminars; and early detection programs. To learn more, please visit avonfoundation.org.

It's easy for you to join me – no walking involved!  Your tax-deductible donation will not only help me reach (and hopefully exceed!) my $1800 fundraising goal, It will also move us closer to the end of breast cancer.   To make a donation, just visit my fundraising page at http://www.avonwalk.org/goto/anh_gibbs.  Thank you so much for supporting my commitment.

Best regards,

Anh

P. S.  Anh doesn’t just walk the walk (Avon Walk that is), she also talks the talk and cooks the food!  In other words, her fundraising activities for good causes extend beyond the Avon Walk detailed above.

On three other Saturdays in October – the 10th, 17th, and 31st, Anh will be teaching introductory computer classes (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) at Amity.  On Saturday, November 7 she will be teaching “Basic Chinese Cooking.”  Proceeds from all classes will support the “Water for Life” mission trip that several Amity congregants are taking to the Dominican Republic during the week of Thanksgiving.  Go to www.amityumc.org to learn more about those opportunities.  Return to top

"Durham Herald" front page article, 2-08-10

"Blood Done Sign My Name" stars Rick Schroeder as author Dr. Tim Tyson's father, Rev. Vernon Tyson, and Nate Parker as Ben Chavis. Based on the book of the same name, this autobiographical account recalls the 1970 racial murder of Henry Marrow, the racial unrest that followed the acquittal of three white suspects, and Rev. Tyson’s ministry of reconciliation during that period.   The book was made into a movie by Gastonia native Jeb Stuart, himself the son of a minister, and screenwriter of "Die Hard" and "The Fugitive."

Rev. Tyson was Amity's interim minister Jan - June 2008.  Tim led our Lent 2009 study, "The Cross in Black and White," which brought in over 50 community members eager to study Southern Christianity in the context of race relations. This year's Lenten series will expand on our outreach efforts by bringing in community leaders to talk primarily about issues of social justice.

If you are not familiar with the back-story of "Blood Done Sign My Name," here's a wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_Done_Sign_My_Name
and a brief book review:

Here's a You Tube clip about the filming of the movie in which Tim specifically talks about John Hope Franklin:
